Nereide Aureo and the noble Art of Gold

Nereide Aureo

The beauty and refinement of gold have always captivated humanity. This precious metal, with its unique luster and intrinsic value, has played a central role in many works of art and luxury items. Our new creation, Nereide Aureo, combines the elegance of gold with technological innovation, paying tribute to the Venetian artisanal tradition.

The Art of Goldworking

Nereide Aureo

Gold symbolizes purity and luxury. Working with this metal requires extraordinary skill, especially for delicate applications like the Nereide Aureo dial. Our dial is adorned with a 24k pure gold treatment, featuring a rippled finish that makes each model unique. This process evokes the ancient Venetian art of precious metal lamination, a technique that made Venice famous over the centuries.

A Brief History of Gold in the Serenissima

Since the Middle Ages, Venice has been a crucial center for the trade of precious metals. Due to its strategic position and trade ties with the East, the city became a reference point for gold working and distribution in Europe. Venetian master goldbeaters developed advanced lamination techniques, creating ultra-thin gold leaves used to decorate churches, palaces, and works of art.

The most famous example of gold lamination is the Basilica of San Marco. The interior of the basilica is the pinnacle of Byzantine golden mosaics. Its walls and domes, covered with mosaics created between the 9th and 13th centuries, span over 8,000 square meters. These mosaics, made with colored and gilded glass tesserae, depict biblical scenes, saints, and geometric decorations. The technique, using ultra-thin gold leaves on glass, gives the basilica a luminous and sumptuous appearance. This medieval art masterpiece highlights the skill of Venetian artisans and symbolizes the wealth of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, cementing its historical role as a cultural and artistic crossroads of the Mediterranean.

Venezianico's Goldworking Process

The 24k gold treatment used for the Nereide Aureo dial is extremely delicate and requires the utmost care at every production stage. Each metal disc undergoes a tumbling process to achieve a rippled and intentionally imperfect surface. Next comes the galvanic treatment, where the disc is immersed in an electrolytic solution containing pure gold particles. Through the application of an electric current, these particles deposit uniformly on the disc's surface, creating a durable and brilliant gold layer.

After the galvanic treatment, the dial is coated with transparent protective varnishes. These varnishes protect the gold layer from scratches, oxidation, and other damage, ensuring superior durability and resistance compared to traditional lamination methods. Each stage of the process is followed by rigorous quality controls, structured into four main stages, to guarantee an impeccable and uniform surface. This approach not only evokes the aesthetic result of traditional lamination but surpasses it in durability and uniformity.
