The 1950s

The story of Hong Kong’s hue

This limited edition, created in collaboration with Horoverse, celebrates the deep connection between Venice and Hong Kong, two cities shaped by water and resilience. In the post-war 1950s, amid scarcity, Hong Kong discovered its identity hue in surplus military green paint, covering trams, Star Ferry boats, and market shutters. In Cantonese, the word “green” (綠) echoes the sound of “prosperity” (祿), giving this shade an auspicious and symbolic meaning. With the Arsenale Hong Kong Green, Venezianico and Horoverse pay homage to this fragment of history, transforming it into a timepiece to be worn—a bridge between cultural memory and contemporary design.

Green Across Generations

From ferry shutters to tram lines and the Star Ferry, this olive green became more than a background shade—it framed the rhythm of everyday life. Its presence seeped into architecture, transportation, and public spaces, turning into an unspoken emblem of the city. Beyond its practical origin, it evolved into a shared visual language: a symbol of belonging, prosperity, and the collective spirit that shaped Hong Kong’s identity. Photo credit: Hiuman Lam.

A Dial Inspired by the Star Ferry Clock Tower

The sector dial pays tribute to the Central Star Ferry Pier’s clock tower, a defining landmark on Victoria Harbour and a daily reference point for the city. For decades, its chimes and silhouette marked the flow of time across Hong Kong, guiding commuters and framing the skyline. The dial’s architecture reflects this heritage: an outer ring with minute markers and an inner circle that mirrors the tower’s clock face. The distinctive 3, 6, 9, and 12 indexes capture the familiar act of glancing up at the tower to read the hour—now reinterpreted on the wrist. Photo credit: Lam Chi Yeung.

Cultural Fragment to Wear

Hong Kong Green is more than a shade, it embodies resilience, prosperity, and the spirit of a city that rose from scarcity to define its own identity. Within this limited edition, the symbolism takes shape in steel and color, transforming a utilitarian tone into a design of refined elegance. By engraving the Star Ferry and Central Pier on the caseback and capturing the city’s visual DNA on the dial, Venezianico and Horoverse turn a fragment of Hong Kong’s story into a timepiece of enduring cultural significance.
